Wauwatosa West High School is making theatre history by becoming the first high school ever to stage the Broadway hit Dear Evan Hansen, which won the 2017 Tony Award for Best Musical. Their performances run from November 14 – 16 and 20 – 22, 2025.
The school’s theater director, Adam Steffan, worked directly with the original authors of the show to adapt the Broadway production for a high school cast, including adjusting musical keys and modifying mature themes. While the show still carries a PG-13 content advisory, the adaptation aims to make the story accessible to a younger cast and audience.
Dear Evan Hansen deals with serious themes, such as a teen’s identity, feelings of belonging, and grief; the adaptation process has required thoughtful modifications, and Wauwatosa West had to secure rights through licensing. The administration has taken extra care in the musical’s production: students and parents were briefed in advance about the themes, and the school’s mental health team is supporting the cast of 24 performers and 75 production team members throughout rehearsals.
Director Steffan stated the decision to pick Dear Evan Hansen was influenced by community interest and the students’ talent—he believes this cast is “terrific” and feels honored to be the first at this undertaking.
The cast and crew have been working tirelessly, rehearsing every scene, perfecting every note, and shaping a production full of authenticity and heart. From Evan’s journey of self-discovery to the ensemble’s vibrant energy, the show is set to bring the characters’ emotions to life. This is a story about courage, connection, and the impact of small acts of kindness—timeless themes that feel especially relevant today.
