Whether you are in a new home or in a home you have owned for ages, preparing your home for winter is a must. It may feel overwhelming, but a few small tasks can prevent larger hassles and expenses. Here are 10 things to consider before the cold weather comes.
1. Bring in cushions and patio furniture. If your furniture is too heavy or you don’t have a place for it, cover it with durable covers that tie underneath to prevent them from blowing. This will add years to the life of your furniture.
2. Fill gaps and cracks in and around your windows and doors. Use caulk for smaller areas and a foam filler for larger areas. Adding or replacing your door sweeps can also prevent cold air and little critters looking for a warm place this winter.
3. Turn off your hose bibs. Drain and then turn off the main water source. When water expands as it freezes, it can lead to cracked pipes.
4. If you haven’t already done your fall clean-up, clean your gutters and remove leaves from roof corners. Once these leaves are wet and frozen, they can expand and create roof leaks.
5. Do not cover outside air conditioner units. They are meant to be outside uncovered. Little creatures can make nests and homes, causing damage to the units.
6. Use a washable boot mat in your garage and entrances into the home to prevent tracking salt and mud onto your wood floors.
7. Have your chimney inspected. Make sure there are no nests or cracking before you light the first fire of the season.
8. Add insulation. Fill attic rafters with insulation to prevent warm air from escaping.
9. Re-stock on Ice Melt or salt to spread on your pathways and entry to prevent ice from forming.
10. Re-set your thermostat schedule so that it is around 65 degrees while you are gone for the day, and 71 degrees when you are home.
