Have you received notification from your municipality/village regarding your property value and tax assessments? Across the board, most communities experience some type of revaluation. Here’s a quick rundown on what’s happening and what it means.

Common Questions:

What’s a Property Revaluation?

A property revaluation is when the city takes a fresh look at all property values to make sure they match up with the current market. This helps ensure that everyone’s property taxes are fair and balanced. Property values change over time due to market trends, interest rates, and other factors. The last time this happened was in 2019, so it’s time for a refresh!

How Will This Affect Me?

  • Value Changes: Even if you haven’t changed anything about your home, your property value might still shift because of market changes.
  • Neighborhood Differences: Not all areas or property types will see the same changes. Factors like demand for one-story vs. two-story homes or the age of homes in your neighborhood can affect how much your assessment changes.
  • Inspections: The city might ask to inspect your home to get a better idea of its value. You don’t have to let them in, but it might help make the assessment more accurate if you do.

What If I Disagree With My Assessment?

  • Check Your Assessment: Once you get your new property assessment, take a look. If you think something’s off, you can reach out to the Assessor’s Office to discuss it.
  • Appeal if Needed: If you still disagree, you can appeal to the Board of Review. Just remember, you’ll need to show proof, like recent sales of similar properties, to support your case.
